I had a fresh disk, decided to install Debian wheezy and upgrade to devuan to avoid a netinstall as I already had Debian 7.8 on DVDs.
It was quite painless, although I had to guess for a few things - didn't know what a "suite" was. Chose the offered "suite" to find out it was ceres (I didn't know what it meant, or what the other choices were). Now I know ceres is the equivalent of sid in Debian. I'm ok with unstable on this testing exerimental machine.
I made sure to install a minimal wheezy - no desktop - to make the "upgrade" easier. Installed xfce4 after getting onto devuan for graphical interface.
Now I'm trying to install a few things like konsole and okular, I find they won't install. I wonder if that is because they are kde and kde depends too much on dbus (like the gnome situation)?
Not a big deal, but as I go on I will want to install some substitute for them. I like the tabs on konsole. I have to find another pdf viewer that isn't okular or evince ... not sure what to choose.
Next thing, installing org-mode (emacs add-on) - it failed with
dpkg: cycle found while processing triggers:
chain of packages whose triggers are or may be responsible:
fontconfig -> fontconfig
packages' pending triggers which are or may be unresolvable:
dpkg: error processing package fontconfig (--configure):

Hmm. Well, onwards.
Thanks for starting the Devuan project.
