And how we use it in our global setup...
In terms of solidity, IRC and the mailing-list are most volatile, followed by the Gitlab, this board, and finally, the web site. We tend to create contents for the website from these various channels.
In order to cross-pollinate and facilitate consolidation of knowledge around Devuan, this board also serves as a comment system for the web, some pages being attached to a topic here. This way we can easily go back and forth between "crystallized contents" and conversation to improve our common knowledge.
Anyone can participate to Devuan Discourse. Privileges are gained with participation, including reading, rating, and writing. At the beginning you can only read and rate, but soon you can reply to a topic, or create a new one.
Anybody can create topics in the Miscellaneous category. These topics will expire after a week of inactivity. If a misc topic becomes lively, participants should move it to another more suited category. See below for an overview of categories.
Confirmed users can reply to topics by email. This option is very interesting for people who prefer using email to Web boards. When replying by email, you should take extra care not to send useless cruft such as parts of the previous response not directly relevant to your reply, email signatures, or encryption information. You're welcome to use the email sandbox for your tests.
Devuan Discourse Categories
There are 7 categories on this board:
USE for installation, use cases, and generic usage
STUDY for advanced usage and customization
SHARE for community and distribution concerns
HACK for derivative work and developer issues
Devuan includes the software category which intends to provide a single topic per software package changed or created in Devuan.
Meta relates to the board itself, and how we use it as an amplifier for our communities.
- When a topic is not categorized, it ends up in Miscellaneous. Misc is suited for conversations that do not fit anywhere else, or for tentative topics or short-lived interests (some FAQs start there.) When you can't create topics in other categories, you may be able to create one there.
There are other (hidden) categories that you can discover as you participate more.
